Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists provisions issued by Thomas Jones, Commissary General, Middle Department at posts from Wilmington, Delaware to Newark, New Jersey for part of July, and all of August 1777. Notes the total rations due for those months are "4,024,468" amounts drawn are "3,638,276" and the amounts retained are "445.597." States, "Total Issued in the middle department from July to Dec.r 31. 1777.....3.638,175 Rations."
