Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Sent three of the maps by post as Knox directed. Each map costs 20 shillings or $2.50, for a total of $7.50. Encloses the account with receipts (not included). Reports "The City of New York is in a state of anarchy every night since the arrival of the french Frigate." This is in reference to the arrival of the French frigate "Ambuscade," which brought news of the French declaration of war against Great Britain.
