Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Date inferred from a pencil note that states, "With letter of W Sargent 30 March 1796" (GLC02437.06682). Apparently continued from another page. Contains sections 3, 4, and 5, each referring to inventories of trunks or boxes. No. 3 is a book list indicating the number of copies of "More's France, Domestic Memoirs, Roman's Floridas, Stewarts political Economy, Franklin's polil Works... Principles of Taxation, Anderson's Institute's, Mirabeau's Portrait," and others. No. 4 notes uncataloged books and swords. No. 5 lists sconces and papers from the right and left hand side of the bookcase. Location inferred.
