Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Note on Miller's own stationary which reads "Miller A. Wright, Dr., Dealer in Dry Good, Clothing, Notions, Boots, Shoes and Hats." Financial statement. There are numerical quantities listed in the right margin, while text fills the rest of the page. The last page has been ripped in half, and only the bottom half is present. It reads: "Will Burns has some notes of mine against me that are settled and went to get them today-But he kept them for the purposes of having the mortgage cancelled-He will turn them over."
