At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert Cambridge congratulates his father on maintaining his mills throughout a period of "downfall and destruction." Preceded by a letter dated 19 February 1770, in which Robert Cambridge discusses the sale of his father's sloop, and also mentions that the crops in France and England have been particularly abundant this year.
