Near Vicksburg, May 31st 1863,
Dear Admiral,
Will you please direct the Marine Brigade to debark at Haine's Bluff and send all their steamers, or as many as possible, to Memphis to bring down reinforcements. I have ordered the troops but it is a difficult matter to get the transportation.
I would specially request that any of these steamers that can be spared be got off at the earlyest possible moment.
Very Truly yours
U. S. Grant
To Maj. Gen.
