At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One Wire photograph released by International News Photos dated August 27, 1957. This photo is a copy of the report written by Charles A. Lindbergh when he shot down a Japanese airplane on July 29, 1944. According to the attached press release Lindbergh was participating in the mission as an observer to help teach younger pilots how to get more range from their planes. The photo is stamped on the back with International News Photos information.
