Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One print of Abraham Lincoln for the magazine, Punch. Reverse side contains print of a male and female overseer with a Black enslaved child. The child's face is not shown but does appear to be pleading to the man. The woman is wearing stripes with a whip in one hand and raising her other fist. The man wears a shirt with stars. Standing together they appear like the American flag.
