At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Brigadier General Meigs as Quartermaster General of the Army. References Pascal's letter of 6 April 1862 that enclosed illustrations of his plan for sinking the CSS "Merrimac." Says they have been referred to the Secretary of the Navy. Written on letterhead of the Quartermaster General's Office. File includes a small (5.1 x 4.1 cm.) engraving of Meigs's head.
