Civil War

1861–1865

The Union Army had more than 2,000,000 members over the course of the Civil War. Federico Fernández Cavada, Pauline Cushman, and Edward Day Cohota were three who fought for the United States in different ways. Cavada served in the revolutionary Balloon Corps in 1862. Pauline Cushman was one of the many women who played a crucial role in the war, serving as a Union spy. Edward Day Cohota was a Chinese American soldier who served in the Union Army and subsequently spent almost thirty years in the military.
