Written by William to his brother Major General Henry Knox. Mentions he wrote a letter from Bristol, England about two weeks previous. Says he consigned 108 pounds worth of jewelry to Sears and Smith, to be delivered to his order. Says another shipment of glass from Bristol worth 200 pounds was sent as well as another shipment of hosiery from Nottingham worth 450 pounds. Also sent along about 60 pounds worth of things for Henry's family. Says he heard that Henry has expressed much interest in farming.

Authorizes William, his brother, to conduct business on his behalf if he dies. Reports that he has been at Boston with his family for about three weeks. Relates details of the discharge of most of the Continental Army, noting that roughly five hundred soldiers plus artillery remain as a temporary measure to serve until Congress makes further regulation. Discusses business affairs extensively. Mentions the metal "argent," or silver, and asks William to procure articles such as "dining and tea table equipage...

Refers to having sailed to almost every part of the globe. Mentions a set of mugs he bought for Knox in Canton, China (present-day Guangzhou), one of which has since broken.

Mentions a recent sale, at which Mr. [John?] Hancock bought a dressing table for the "high price of forty one dollars." Discusses family and friends.

Jackson, in charge of Knox's financial affairs, mentions the sale of carpets that had been consigned to Knox. Advises Knox to allow his notes to "take their chance in the Bank... for to sell them at the present going price (which is very low) would be doing such a great injury to your family that you would forever be unhappy afterwards." Suggests that Knox obtain a loan from New York Bank to pay his bills due in Boston if he cannot obtain back pay he is owed.

Urges Webber to arrange for William's passage to America, possibly on Captain Coffin's ship or the next vessel that will accept him. Discusses business transactions left unattended by William, mentioning the firm Smith & Loring, the possible sale of the Birmingham, and the sale of carpeting.

Writes, "...it is probable that they must be sold at a credit as money is uncommonly scarce."

Writes a friendly letter outlining various happenings in Boston. Relates that Mr. [John] Hancock is recovered and will travel to Congress [in New York] in the coming weeks. A Mr. Oliver Smith refuses to purchase lime from the Winslows because they will not sell it to him as cheaply as he can find it elsewhere. Has arranged to let Mr. Smith take the lime and have Knox work out the price when he arrives in Boston. Will dispose of Knox's hardware goods per his wishes. Captain Callahan will set sail to London on 16 April with Dr. [William] Gordon and his family.

Reports that Captain Hall is not back in town yet so he cannot do anything further about the lime business. Writes that Isaac Winslow has gone to Halifax, but they spoke about it and it is Winslow's opinion that it would take a large farm and many laborers to make the lime business profitable, but it might not be in the Winslow family's power to accomplish that. Further, the "government would not allow monopoly of this article to any one family." Lime is not selling well and the Winslows have a great store of it.

Written from "Newport." Explains that at the beginning of the war, Knox applied to the Provincial Congress in Massachusetts to exchange furniture with Gardiner's Loyalist aunt and uncle Barnes, Knox's furniture being in Boston. Due to poor communication, the Barneses did not know that this exchange was happening until they arrived in England. They were upset because they had to lay out substantial sums for the move, and apparently could have used money from the furniture (either their set or Knox's).
