Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Was informed that there are outstanding taxes on lands in the Flucker estate, and asks Hobby to pay them.

Title: to John Hobby

Received Hobby's last letter but has been unable to respond until now due to being out of town. Discusses payment of taxes on the lands belonging to the late Mr. [Thomas] Flucker, Knox's father-in-law, which are now in Knox's possession. Requests that he draw the money owed from Knox's friend General Henry Jackson.

Title: to Henry Knox

Writes Knox about the militia forming in Maine. States he would like to be appointed Inspector of the militia. Says, "I am pained to the Extreme to find myself in a situation which renders it necessary to Couch my letter in such language as has the smallest appearance of as self recommendation."

Title: to Henry Jackson

Sends Jackson a memorandum outlining his military service under Jackson. Hopes this resume will boost his chance at receiving an appointment in the new militia. On verso Jackson confirms, in his own hand, Hobby's statement on 23 January 1791.

Title: to Henry Knox

Writes, "General Harmar's letter of the 23d of November as publish'd in the papers, has relieved the minds of many, and the people are now less severe in the observations on his conduct." Says Captain John Hobby has written him seeking an appointment in the new militia. Believes Hobby is "one of the best of Officers, and is a Man of activity & integrity, and will do honor to any appointment." Also mentions John Tracy's desire for an appointment. From what he knows, Tracy is an honorable man with a good family.

Title: to Henry Knox

Writes that the letter will be handed to Knox by Captain John Hobby, who may need Knox's help in a redress of grievances against the United States government. Jackson declares that he believes Hobby would be a good candidate for the position of Inspector of the Militia in Maine, if there is an opening available in the new militia bill. Speaks of Hobby's virtues and qualifications for the position.

Title: to Henry Knox

Feels bad having to ask for a favor from Knox. Says that Henry Dearborn, the present marshall for the District of Maine, has been elected to Congress, and Hobby wants Knox to use his influence to help [Hobby] become Dearborn's successor. As the President and Senate need to approve it, he thinks he stands a good chance with Knox's good word.
