The Congressional Republican Committee calls on Republicans to spread literature against the extension of slavery. Lists documents and prices which the Republican Association will furnish upon request. Clephane was Secretary of the Association, and Benjamin Wade was Chairman.
According to Library of Congress, Lewis Clephane was an early organizer of the Republican Party and its first national convention in 1856. He served as postmaster of Washington, D.C. 1861-1863, receiver of Washington and Alexandria Railroad 1869-1871, Washington, D.C. collector of internal revenue 1863-1873 and of taxes 1873-1874. Wade was a United States Senator from Ohio 1851-1866.
