Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to provide a list of books he recommends to Gardoqui, which can be obtained "in this city" (likely New York). They are not all of the same genre, but would "suite the tastes more or less of every man of reading." Regrets that not all have been written and printed in the United States. The list itself is not included.
