A print of a photograph taken of Battery Williams in Corinth, MS. In October 1862, Confederate forces attacked Corinth in an attempt to recapture the strategically important rail lines there. Union forces had taken Corinth the previous spring and erected seven batteries to defend it. On 4 October 1862 the cannonade from Battery Williams devastated the Confederate troops attacking Battery Robinett[e]. The assaults were made bloody and futile for the Confederates by the overwhelming fire laid down. A mounted albumen print. On front: "16 Armstead" in ink on tag; "#805," "6 1/2," and "9738-9-175." On verso: purple ink inscription on adhered tag: "No 16. Another view of Battery Williams - Battery Robinette is obscured by the winter quarters."; twice stamped "Art Department. The Century Co., Union Square, New York City." and "Art Department, The Century Co., 33 East 7th St., New York City"; blue pencil "147" in box; red pencil "148"; and "16 Armstead" in pencil.
