Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Based on orders issued by General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the Army of Tennessee in anticipation of the siege of Atlanta. Orders strengthening of the redoubts and stockade, and fortification of defense. Contains instructions for firing and repair of redoubts.

The Battle of Atlanta took place 22 July 1864, resulting in a Union victory.
