Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letters describe local regimental action. Announces Yankees and gunboats near Donaldsville. Name of Lt. John Stevens, Co. J 23rd Regt C.V. Lafourche Crossing, La. written at top. French translation on right side. Wallpaper has brown and white geometric pattern.

The Confederate Banner was a short-lived paper published during 1862. It served as the official parish paper that year.
