At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Misspelled title in masthead: "Ctizen." This is a variant issue of the newspaper printed with the last half column re-set by Union soldiers after the occupied Vicksburg on July 4. See the original Confederate printing, GLC 5988.05, and the Union printing (with correct masthead), GLC 5959.20. Wallpaper has blue and brown pastoral family scene.

Vicksburg, Mississippi was under siege from May 22 until July 4, 1863, and faced a daily barrage of gunfire from Union forces under U.S. Grant. Utilizing whatever resources were at hand, the Vicksburg Daily Citizen printed this issue on the back of wallpaper.
