At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Capture, sack, and destruction of the city of Columbia. Evacuation of Charleston.

This newspaper was started immediately after the end of the Civil War on 21 March 1865. On 15 May 1865 it was named the Columbia Daily Phoenix, then the Daily Phoenix in July 1864, until it ceased publication in 1879.
