At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A poster featuring advice for soldiers on not wasting food. The poster depicts a young soldier throwing out a full plate of food. It admonishes soldier to not take more at the mess then they can eat and encourages them to insist on getting the right portion when they get their food. A section of the poster reminds them that the "folks back home" are on rations and they should appreciate that by not throwing away the food. The poster also reads "'Food will win the War' True in 1918 - True Today!"
