Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One image entitled, "President Roosevelt and Family," dated July 2, 1903. The portrait is of the family sitting outdoors in front of a garden. President Roosevelt's head has been cut from a similar photograph and pasted onto this one. The printed label beneath the image lists the names or nicknames of each of the family members. In addition to these printed names, the family members have signed below their places in the portrait. President Roosevelt and Edith Roosevelt sit while the children stand behind them, except for Theodore Jr., who sits on his father's knee. According to the label, the photograph was taken at the President's summer White House in Oyster Bay, New York.
