Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"Every man can feel the proud satisfaction that he has done his part in the heroic defense of Port Hudson. The place is surrendered at the last moment it is proper to hold it." Printed on necessity paper inside the fort. Uneven inking and spotting overall. Old paste adhesive stains, possibly from posting.
