Title: Extracts from Davis' journal of activities as American Consul in Tripoli

Detailed account of import/export transactions. In notes from 1 to 6 February 1810, Davis gives an account of the Bey of Tripoli's mission "with 1500 cavalry and a small train of artillery to enforce obedience from some of the adjacent arabs and collect the tribute." Davis omits most names from his account. Third leaf not conjugate. Journal entries spanning 26 November 1809 to 21 February 1810.

Contains shipping records, as well as the arbitrated resolution of a "difference of opinion between the English Consuls and [Davis] as to the amount of freight, of the Vessel which was employed on account of the United States, to transport the family of Hamet Caramanli to Syracuse." Account of Davis taking leave of Tripoli due to "imperious circumstances," and the establishment of John Payne in his place. Journal entries spanning 17 February to 19 March 1810.

Notation on first page: "Copy of a letter received Septr 30th 1812." "Be not astonished!! for alas! it is too true, that I am now addressing you as a Slave in Algiers . . . . I think that all differences will be adjusted between G[reat] B[ritain], & America, Should they not do not let me die a Slave in Algiers . . . .I steal the time after begging the paper to write this." Captain Smith's ship, the "Edwin" was captured the Algerians in 1812. Lear arranged to pay the ransom for his and his eleven crewmembers' freedom.

Mentions the purser will provide necessary cash for expenses and he is asked to keep an account.

Printed report "Of the Committee on Foreign Affairs to which was referred so much of the President's message, as relates to Piracies committed on the Commerce of the United States, in the neighborhood of the Islands of Cuba and Porto Rico." Says the measures adopted by the last session of Congress and the zeal of naval officers in the Caribbean have put a stop to piracy. Says pirates have operated from Cuba "for years" under the eye of the Spanish government. Says the Spanish government was complicit in the acts.

Written by Captain Elliott as commander of the West India Squadron to Lieutenant Mayo as commander of the schooner "Grampus" stationed off the coast of Cuba. This is a clerical copy, with clerical signature of Elliott, of general instructions to Mayo. Marked "Confidential." Says future official communications should be sent to him and copies sent to the Secretary of Navy. Says the government thinks it necessary to have a naval presence in the West Indies and Gulf of Mexico and has put him in charge of it.

Signed by Captain Elliott as commander of the West India Squadron on board the U.S.S. Falmouth to Lieutenant Boughan stationed on the schooner U.S.S. Grampus. Boughan was a subordinate to Lieutenant Isaac Mayo, commander of the "Grampus." Instructions given to convoy any American ships around Cuba that so desire it. Tells him to be on the lookout for "the Hermaphrodite Brig. Manzanans, Captain Abnio, suspected of the piracy committed on the merchant Ship, Candace, of Boston." If captured he is to take him to Havana.
